The
last day of the 2000-01 season was not only memorable for the Barnstaple
Gulls for Torquay staying in the Football League, but also as we
made our television bow as 'Fans
of the Week' on Soccer AM.
With
such an important match on the final day, both ourselves and a group
of Barnet fans had been invited to take part in the show, with our
very own Hells Bells. It was a bit nerve-wracking initially, but
after we had said our bit about why we believed the Gulls were going
to stay up, and we'd sung "Have
You Ever Seen A Beach" at the Barnet fans, everyone quickly
settled down. It also helped that all of the callers to the show
seemed to want Torquay rather than Barnet to stay up, for various
important reasons such as Barnet's kit looked gross, or that fans
from other sides like a weekend on the razzle care of the English
Riviera.
The
regular features such as the Soccerette and Feed The Goat were tremendous.
The Soccerette
was a young trout called Nicola, and she made us Barnstaple
Gulls simply drool. It was fitting that the Chairman, Mark Sanders,
was able to strut his stuff up and down the catwalk with her. The
final feature of the show was Feed
The Goat. For people unfamiliar with the show, both sets
of fans have to try and score as many footballs in the goat's mouth
within the allotted minute. The prize on this day - leaks and potatoes
(sounds similar to League status - copyright Soccer AM!) We had
a cunning plan though, and that was to lose intentionally as Helen
had said to us that whoever loses generally wins the big match in
the afternoon. So naturally we had to oblige by losing, nothing
to do with us being crap of course. We actually did score two, but
this was swamped by Barnet's record total of five! As we all know
though, it was the
afternoon that really mattered, so we like to think we did
our bit in assisting the lads for the big game.
